Updated: Mother and daughter identified as only survivors of Tahoe boat tragedy; GoFundMe set up
This story has been updated to add more details.
Two women from upstate New York are the only survivors when a boat capsized, killing 8, on Lake Tahoe on June 21.
Amy Friduss and her mother, Julie Lindsay, survived when the boat overturned in a sudden storm at the alpine lake on the border of California and Nevada.
They are the daughter and wife of Steve Lindsay, 63, one of the eight victims of the tragedy. Public records show Friduss, of Rochester, N.Y., is 40 and her mother, of Springwater, N.Y., is 65.
GoFundMe first released their names from the verified account Thursday. Sam Singer, a spokesperson for the family of some of the victims, also confirmed the GoFundMe was for people who were on the boat. The fund has raised nearly $19,000 as of Friday morning.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office in California, the lead investigating agency, has not returned a request for comment.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Hasty Team posted on Facebook that both were wearing life jackets.
The GoFundMe was created by Friduss' classmates from the Honeoye, N.Y., high school class of 2003.
Mother and daughter on the mend
"Physically, both mother and daughter are on the mend, but are dealing with the heartbreaking loss of their beloved husband and father, best friends and dear family who perished. This fund is being set up so they can focus on dealing with these unimaginable circumstances instead of worrying about money. These funds will support their living expenses while recovering, medical bills, funeral costs, and any transportation expenses accrued during this time," the GoFundMe page says.
Steve “Zippy” Lindsay, Julie’s beloved husband, Amy's favorite dad, and the unofficial mayor of Honeoye, was quick with a big smile, a hug and a joke for everyone and will be missed beyond measure for his huge heart and quick wit," the fundraising page said.
According to the GoFundMe page, Lindsay had recently retired and planned to spend her years with her husband and best friends Theresa Giullari and Jim Guck, who also died on the boat.
The post said Friduss is a nurse practioner, who treats people living in homeless encampments in her free time.
