Hawaii has the highest life expectancy, Mississippi has the lowest. Where does your state rank?


In a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, Hawaii was found to have the highest life expectancy for residents at 80.9 years while Mississippi ranked the lowest at 74.4 years.

The report analyzes the life expectancy of all 50 states and the District of Columbia using data on age-specific death rates in 2019. The national average life expectancy was 78.8 years old. The CDC found in most cases, women experienced a longer life span than men in their state. 

The lowest life expectancies were seen in the South, according to the report released Thursday.

Highest life expectancies

  4. Minnesota: 80.4 years
  5. Massachusetts: 80.4 years
  6. Connecticut: 80.3 years
  7. New Jersey: 80.1 years

  10. Vermont: 79.8 years

Lowest life expectancies

  1. Mississippi: 74.4 years
  2. West Virginia: 74.5 years
  3. Alabama: 75.2 years
  4. Kentucky: 75.5 years
  5. Tennessee: 75.6 years
  6. Arkansas: 75.7 years
  7. Oklahoma: 75.7 years
  8. Louisiana: 75.7 years
  9. South Carolina: 76.8 years
  10. Ohio: 76.9 years

Elizabeth Arias, the lead author of the new report, told NCB News although poverty levels weren't accounted for, states with low life expectancies also had high levels of poverty. 

"When you look at the map of life expectancy, and if you were to look at a map of socioeconomic status – which includes poverty, education attainment – you would see that they would look very similar," said Arias.
