7-year-old without hands wins handwriting prize
Anaya Ellick was born without hands and doesn't use prostheses, but you would never know it by looking at her penmanship.
"She is a hard worker and has some of the best handwriting in her class," said her school principal Tracy Cox at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia.
It's not actually handwriting for her. The 7-year-old uses both arms to patiently pen each perfect letter.
Her penmanship is so good, she received the national Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship.
"I'm very shocked at all that she can do," said her first grade teacher Joan Stalnaker.
Ellick's mom, Bianca Middleton, isn't surprised by her daughter's drive. "It may be different; it may be hard," she said. "The road may be long, but she will persevere."
