LUBBOCK, Texas — Hector Montez, a 17-year-old high school student, recently surprised his teacher, coach Thomas Walsar, with a heartfelt gift.

In 2014, Walsar mentioned his love for a certain pair of vintage Nike Air Jordans.  He loved the shoes when they came out in the late 1990s but his family couldn’t afford them.

Hector took note and decided to buy the shoes for his coach.  During class, in front of the other students, he presented Walsar with the gift.  Walsar’s reaction was beautiful. He was genuinely touched and had to hold back tears.

For Montez, the act of kindness is more than just the purchase of shoes.  He tells Paste BN that he, “knows the feeling of being without.”  At the age of 4 he was taken away from his biological family and put into the foster care system. For over a decade he bounced around from home to home and had to endure a couple of failed adoptions.

In the 10th grade, his life began to turn around when his best friend’s family adopted him. That same year, he met Walsar, who mentored Montez and continues to play a big role in his life.

Montez is incredibly thankful to Walsar for always believing in him and impacting his life in such a positive way.
