ORANGE, Texas -- In recent weeks, people across the nation have been showing their gratitude to law enforcement officers with different acts of kindness.

In Orange, Texas, a waitress paid for an Orange County Sheriff's deputy's meal, and was later surprised by his kind gesture in return.

Tammy Yawn has been a waitress at PK's Grill since the day the restaurant opened almost five years ago. Customers love her, and she loves them.

But recently headlines about officers being killed in the line of duty has caused heartache for Yawn. So when a deputy came into the restaurant, she paid for his meal and his family's.

"There's just been so much on the news about officers getting shot getting shot and everybody's just bad-mouthing them, saying awful things and they're human beings, just like us," said Yawn.

The deputy left her a $100 bill as a tip.

Yawn said, "I was just wanting to do something nice and what he did was awesome. I'll never forget it."

The deputy did not want to be identified, saying he did not give the tip for recognition, he did it to be nice.

His boss, Sheriff Keith Merritt told 12News he's proud of all his deputies, who he says do good deeds for the community all the time.

Yawn says she'll spend part of her tip to buy a meal for another law enforcement officer.
