Bells toll to commemorate the end of the Civil War

</p><partner-banner util-module-path=elements/partner class=spacer-large min-height=600 fluid outstream momentum></partner-banner><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDqDbl5B9C9X49L_KUYI63XKI4b2_R42J">Video playlist: Bells ring in York to commemorate end of Civil War</a></p><p>For the first minute the bells tolled Thursday at 3:15 p.m., people continued about their business.</p><p>They'd hurry from idling cars into banks or work, they'd laugh with friends or eat a late lunch.</p><p>But by the second-minute mark, other than those blissfully in their own headphone-enclosed world, people began to take notice.</p><p>"I didn't know what it was. I asked my husband but he didn't know," said Alvita Parson, sitting on a bench in downtown York.</p><p>Ray Ritter had heard the bells would be ringing to commemorate a "very big turn in time," but he hadn't come to York from York Haven just to hear them.</p><p>Scott Miller hadn't known about the bells or what they stood for but had just arrived at the Rabbit Transit downtown transfer station when he heard the "really nice sound" from Trinity United Church of Christ's bell tower.</p><partner-banner util-module-path=elements/partner fluid bottom lazy class=spacer-large min-height=390 outstream></partner-banner><partner-inline util-module-path=elements/partner class=spacer-large placement=native-article_link sizes="[[300, 250], [3, 3]]" min-height=250 fluid outstream></partner-inline><p>These York countians had just unwittingly joined in with the rest of the United States of America — a phrase said to be first uttered in York when founding fathers convened to draft and adopt the Articles of Confederation — to celebrate a moment 150 years ago that helped to preserve that union.</p><p>At the York County Administrative Center just east of Continental Square York Commissioners Chris Reilly and Doug Hoke, county spokesman Carl Lindquist and Director of Facilities Scott Cassel took turns ringing the bell for four minutes.</p><partner-inline util-module-path=elements/partner placement=native-article_link sizes="[[300, 250], [3, 3]]" min-height=250 fluid outstream></partner-inline><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=elements/cta class=spacer-large></cta-atoms-container-inline><p>That's one minute for each year the Civil War ripped the nation apart and slaughtered more than 700,000 people until meeting its symbolic end when Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the home of Wilmer McLean in Appomattox, Va., on April 9, 1865.</p><p>And York, rich in its own early American history, was a perfect place to ring in the commemoration.</p><p>On Duke Street the Rex/Laurel Fire Station the bell, pulled by hand, tolled not only the end of the Civil War but also the 225 anniversary of its charter, according to York fire chief David P. Michaels.</p><partner-banner util-module-path=elements/partner fluid bottom lazy class=spacer-large min-height=600 outstream momentum></partner-banner><p>The Trinity United Church of Christ, constructed during the war, will celebrate its own sesquicentennial in August, according to Jeffrey Cogan, the organist-choirmaster for the church.</p><p>The eight bells in the tower, the largest of which Cogan described as 2,000 pounds and large enough for a person to stand inside fully erect, have long since been electrified and can be controlled by the organ console in the sanctuary.</p><p>Michael Parson, a Marine Corps veteran and husband to Alvita Parson, called the Civil War "a little before my time," but appreciated the commemoration by bell when he learned of its meaning.</p><p>He called the surrender a "major turning point" for not just the war but also for societal changes that followed.</p><partner-banner util-module-path=elements/partner fluid bottom lazy
