Spooky skies: NASA releases image of jack-o'-lantern sun

NASA gave us a treat for Halloween: a jack-o'-lantern sun.

The image, taken on Oct. 8, shows brighter spots on the sun that make it look like a creepy, grinning pumpkin.

"The active regions appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy — markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona," according to the space agency.

The image is actually a blend of two sets of wavelengths typically colored in yellow and gold, NASA says.
