Teen who was near death, now star volleyball player
After watching high-school senior Bailey McGuire slam a volleyball across the net, it's not surprising to know that she holds almost every volleyball record at her school. What is surprising, is that only one year ago, Bailey was near death laying on the side of the road after being in a massive car accident.
"I was out. I was basically gone," said Bailey.
Driving around town in November of 2013, Bailey and four friends lost control of their car and slammed into a tree. The driver was killed in the accident. Four of the girls were thrown from the vehicle, one of them being Bailey. She suffered a major brain injury. Bailey said, "I kind of remember laying there, but I wasn't awake."
Bailey spent 48 days straight in the hospital recuperating and healing from the accident, which included three hours of physical therapy a day. Bailey said her desire to play volleyball helped motivate her throughout her recovery.
This winter, Bailey is back on the volleyball court, and not just as a spectator to cheer on her teammates. She's playing again and is as strong as before.
"This girl has worked her butt off," says Bailey's mom, Kelly McGuire.
Bailey's volleyball career won't end this year when she graduates high school, she has accepted a volleyball scholarship to play in college.
