See how dad reacts to son picking 'Little Mermaid' doll

When Azai Willis got two of the same presents for his birthday, his dad Mikki took him to the store to pick out a different toy.

Mikki's reaction when Azai picked out a 'Little Mermaid' princess doll is stirring conversation online.

"How do you think a dad feels when his son wants to get this," Mikki Willis said in a YouTube video posted on August 23 as he revealed the doll Azai opted for in exchange for his duplicate gift. "Yeahh!"

Mikki, who's been posting short videos of his son for the past three years, decided to share Azai's toy choice because "it's a reminder of how much we all need to feel embraced and accepted."

Mikki said he sees so much negativity shared through social media, and this is his way of bringing a little balance to the commotion.

"To know we've touched people beyond our immediate community is both humbling and awesome!" Mikki said in his Facebook post. "My boys fill my wife and I with so much joy that it would be selfish of us not to share them."

The father from Ojai, California, said his young son is equally fascinated by princesses as he is of robots.

"One moment he's all boy, the next he's expressing a softer, more angelic side," Mikki said. "For me this behavior rings more authentic than playing one note all the time."

But Mikki admits he did have a little reaction to the particular doll Azai chose.

He said after looking at the Disney Princesses doll collection the Little Mermaid was part of and not seeing much variety of skin colors or body types, Mikki had to resist the urge to tell his son to chose a more realistic doll.

"I don't want my boys to adapt to the programming that a women should be built like a Barbie," Mikki said, but Azai was clear that he wanted the Ariel doll. "I backed off knowing this would be the catalyst for us to have a powerful conversation about the beauty of body-types and racial equality."
