Watch: The 'Cha Cha Slide' middle school dreams are made of
This is not your average "Cha Cha Slide" slide.
A 20-year-old Saipan-born, Guam raised dancer was recently filmed putting a unique twist on the "Cha Cha Slide" at the San Roque Church fiesta in Sacramento, Calif. Derick C. Toves' said he was just trying to entertain the people around him with his own version of the dance floor staple.
"Because I had family there at the fiesta, it gave me the energy and comfort to show these state siders how to throw down," Toves said. "Also, I wanted to show the youngsters that were raised out here that you don't have to be from Cali to be a dancer."
A video of the performance was uploaded to YouTube on Aug. 28, and as of Tuesday had over a million views.
Despite showing some extra moves and skills in the two-minute video, Toves says he wasn't expecting it to gain the attention it has garnered.
"Well at first, someone tagged me on the video of me dancing," Toves says. "Then days later other people started tagging me. I showed my companion and we saw how many views there were. It was around hundreds."
The video also got a share on hip-hop artist Chris Brown's website and Facebook pages as well as other Vine-related sites.
"It's such a blessing to see that people admire my talent and that I can make people smile," Toves says. "That's awesome. I love where I'm from and Ill never forget that. It's in my blood. Guam is my home. I want to share others and no matter what, you're never too young or too old to dance."
