Shots fired outside Fla. hospital

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A man attempted — but failed — to shoot his wife near Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne Monday evening, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Police said a man tried to shoot his wife while she was in her vehicle in the hospital's parking lot around 7:30 p.m. ET, but missed. The woman was not injured in the incident and was able to flee in her vehicle until she located an ambulance nearby, according to Melbourne Police Cmdr. Sean Riordan.

"She flagged down the ambulance," Riordan said. "They were able to call us and protect her until we got there."

Police believe the man, whose identity has not been released, fled the scene in a vehicle. The search for the man is still underway.

Holmes Regional was on lockdown from the time of the shooting until around 10:10 p.m. The shooting also forced a lockdown at Melbourne High School due to an event being held there.

Previous reports of a lockdown at nearby Keiser College were incorrect.
