Two officers shot responding to Tenn. robbery
NASHVILLE — Two law enforcement officials were shot in Lewis County Thursday night, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The shooting happened in the town of Hohenwald, about an hour and a half southwest of Nashville.
TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine said the shooting was first reported around 7:30 p.m. CT.
DeVine said four law enforcement officials, two Hohenwald police officers and two Lewis County sheriff's deputies responded to a robbery call at a residence in Hohenwald. When officials tried to stop the robbery suspect, DeVine said, there was an exchange of gunfire.
"During the course of that exchange, two officers were struck," he said. "One officer was flown from the area to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and the other officer, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was hit in the chest, and was treated at the scene."
The robbery happened at a home near the 200 block of North Park Street, and shots were fired outside a tire shop in the area, DeVine said.
Four TBI agents responded to the scene in Hohenwald, and the TBI will lead the investigation at the request of the local district attorney, DeVine said.
A TBI forensic team was traveling to Hohenwald around 9 p.m. Thursday.
DeVine did not confirm the condition of the suspect.
