Rubio calls for more welders, fewer philosophers
With protesters across the country calling for a $15 an hour minimum wage on Tuesday, GOP candidates at the latest debate said increasing the wage is not the way to go.
New York businessman Donald Trump said it should be left where it is. The federal minimum wage is $7.25.
Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson said increasing the minimum wage would have a negative impact on the job prospects of African Americans.
"Every time we raise, the number of jobless people increases. And it's particularly bad in the black community," he said.
And Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, meanwhile, took the opportunity to call for more vocational education — while taking a swipe at the academic choices of some liberal arts majors.
"You're going to make people more expensive than a machine. We need more welders and less philosophers."
