Dog stands guard over body of 'lifelong' canine companion
A Great Pyrenees named Brian became an incredible example of a dog’s loyalty when he stood guard over an injured canine companion in Texas earlier this week.
Samuel Flores, of Dallas, Texas, was driving down the road when he saw Brian standing watch over the body of a 1-year-old Shepherd mix named Marley, CBS reported.
He snapped a picture of the scene and posted it on Facebook.
“Can anybody help this poor dog, his buddy got hit by a car, I'm assuming, and he's by his guard,” Flores wrote in the Nov. 8 post.
Brian was protecting the body of his “lifelong companion" Marley, who died after being hit by a car, according to a statement from the City of Dallas.
Julie Fennell of the nonprofit animal rescue No Bully Left Behind arrived on the scene and told CBS it looked like Brian had dragged the injured animal “up off the street and onto the grass.”
"When I got there he was sitting, friendly, calm, drooling, upset and stressed out," Fennell told CBS.
Fennell took Brian to her car and later returned to collect the body of the dog that Brian had so diligently watched over.
Brian disappeared from his family’s home on Sunday through an open garage door, according to the City of Dallas. Brian’s owners stepped forward earlier this week and he has been reunited with them, according to the statement.
The photo of Brian is a reminder to "people that dogs have the capability to love too,” the City of Dallas said in a statement.
