CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of the mayor of a north Georgia town in his home Sunday night.

Mayor Terry Greene was shot in the head inside of his home about 7 p.m. Sunday. He was taken to a hospital and then was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Greene's wife, Anne, was at their Clarkesville home when Greene was shot. Sheriff Joey Terrell said officials believe the injury was the result of a domestic dispute.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has questioned Anne Greene, but she is not in custody.

"At this point, we're still trying to determine how the gun shot was sustained," said Chief Brad Barrett of Clarkesville Police Department.

Barrett told The Times of Gainesville that officers found Greene lying in a room believed to be his study.

Clarkesville is the county seat of Habersham County, Ga. The city is located about 80 miles northeast of Atlanta.

According to the city's website, Greene has been involved in city government for several years having been first elected to the city council in 1999 after serving four years on the zoning commission.

He was first elected as mayor in 2005 and again in 2009.  The husband and father of four was a University of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia graduate. He also operated a private medical practice in Habersham County.

In a statement, the Clarkesville City Council and City Manager said, "We are all devastated by the tragic loss of our mayor, colleague, and friend Dr. Terry Greene. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we ask that you please respect their privacy during this difficult time."

The statement said they would have no more "comments at this time."
