Texas man charged for shutting down highway to propose

HOUSTON, Texas – A man who brought traffic to a halt on a busy highway so he could propose to his girlfriend on Sunday will face charges, according to police.

Vidal Valladares Navas has been charged with obstructing a highway, a class B misdemeanor, according to Houston police.

Valladares Navas and a few of his friends stopped traffic on I-45 so he could propose to 23-year-old Michelle Wycoff. A video of the proposal was posted on Wycoff's Instagram and Valladares Navas posted on social media about the incident.

“When you shut down one of the biggest and busiest freeways in the entire country and you ask your girl if she wants to marry you, that moment is priceless," he wrote following the incident.

An off-duty officer happened to see the proposal Sunday and he helped Houston police with the investigation.

The district attorney's office reviewed video of the proposal posted by the couple on Instagram and decided to accept charges.

Valladares Navas' bride-to-be is not being charged.

The misdemeanor is punishable by up to six months in jail.

Valladares Navas told Inside Edition he never imagined the proposal would cause such a stir.

“I just wanted to apologize to all of them," Valladares Navas said. "I didn't want to cause any trouble."
