Ind. police investigate death of suspect in custody
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police are investigating the death of a domestic violence suspect who complained of chest pain and died while in police custody.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were initially called to a domestic disturbance where a teen said she and her mother had been beaten by a man at her mother's home.
Police arrived at the home to find the teen's mother, whom police said had suffered significant facial injuries, and the suspect.
Officers arrested the suspect on a charge of domestic battery without incident while medical personnel were tending to the teen and her mother. Shortly after his arrest, the suspect "complained of (chest) pain and a medic was notified, said Sgt. Christopher Wilburn with the Indianapolis police, in an email.
When a second ambulance was called, the suspect immediately went into "critical cardiac arrest," police said. The medics administered life-saving efforts, but the suspect died at the scene.
The suspect's death is considered an "in-custody death investigation," Wilburn said. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's critical incident response team will investigate the circumstances of the incident.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted. Police have not released the suspect's name.
