SANIBEL, Fla. — Don and Jo Anne Mengle went to Sanibel Island in search of wildlife.

But on the way back to their Fort Myers, Fla., home is when they came across an interesting — only in Florida — surprise.

"All of a sudden I saw this large alligator just walk across the road very slowly, very deliberately," said Don Mengle, 80. "It was quite a sight."

Don Mengle grabbed his Nikon and from his car snapped 10 pictures of the scaly reptile as it crossed Sanibel Captiva Road.

"It's rather unusual," Don Mengle said. "We laughed about it quite a bit."

The Mengles of State College, Pa., came to the Fort Myers area on vacation.

Don Mengle estimated the alligator was about 8 feet long, and about a half dozen cars waited for the reptile to cross the road.

"He didn’t look either way," Don Mengle said. "He just came straight across the road and took his time doing it."
