Commuters across the Washington D.C. area had to implement plan B to make it into work on Wednesday after safety officials shuttered the metro for 29 hours to inspect the metro rail system.

On Twitter, the hashtags #MetroShutdown and #metropocalypse were used to describe the harrowing lengths that many commuters went to in order to make it to the office.

People tweeted long lines at bus stops and the city's bike sharing stations.

There's always a bright side.
