WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument reopened Wednesday, a day after the elevator got stuck at 280 feet, the National Park Service said.
The Washington Monument closed Tuesday afternoon when the elevator stopped about halfway up the 555-foot obelisk.
The National Park Service said 19 people who were on the elevator were evacuated safely along with 23 people who were on the observation level. Everyone had to walk down the stairs.
The cause of the outage hasn't been determined yet.
The park service said it is waiting for a final report from technicians on the cause of the outage. Technicians have certified that the elevator is safe.
The elevator has stalled several times in the last year.
