City off lockdown after bomb threat at N.Y. hospital

CITY OF LOCKPORT, N.Y. – A bomb squad was called to the Eastern Niagara Hospital Saturday morning after a man armed with two guns said he had a bomb.

Police recovered the two guns and the suspected bomb from the hospital. According to the hospital, the suspect was provided with a limited amount of drugs. Lockport police said the unidentified man arrived at the hospital around 5 a.m. and tried to forcibly take medication from the facility.

Following the bomb threat, police issued a shelter in place order for all City of Lockport residents near the hospital, though the order was lifted at 10:57 a.m.

"Lockport Police have lifted the shelter in place and state the area is now safe to the public," The Niagara County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Ambulances were diverted away from the hospital during the lockdown, according to a statement from the hospital. According to the hospital, no shots were fired, and all patients and staff are safe.

Police described the suspect as a white male with blonde hair, about 6' tall in his early 20's. He was last seen wearing a tan shirt and pants.

Heather Ly of WGRZ-TV tweeted police are investigating a person of interest, though there have been no arrests.
