LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. -- A copperhead snake hiding inside a tree at a local Lowe's bit a store employee on Monday, according to fire officials.
According to the East Lincoln Fire Department, an employee was bitten by a 4-and-a-half-foot copperhead snake while in the garden section of the store.
"This could happen at any store that sells trees," the fire department said on Facebook. "So, be mindful when shopping for gardening supplies."
Copperheads are common in North Carolina. Although their venom is fairly mild and rarely results in death, it can cause allergic reactions in some people.
Authorities said the snake was hiding in a tree.
Officials did not comment on the employee's condition following the bite.
