Police seek 2 more suspects in kidnapping of boy, 13
DETROIT — Police have arrested the prime suspect in Tuesday's abduction of a 13-year-old Detroit boy but they are asking for the public's help in locating two other suspects.
Meanwhile, investigators are trying to determine whether the body of what appeared to be a young black male found in a Detroit field is that of Deontae Mitchell.
Gregory Walker, 45, was arrested near the Toledo area, Michigan State Police confirmed. He was with an unidentified woman, who also was taken into custody.
The two suspects still being sought are Ernest Coleman, 30, and Roy Portis, 51, of Detroit, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said at a news conference Thursday morning at police headquarters.
He declined to say how police believe the men were involved.
An active Amber alert remains in effect for the boy. A male body found in a field hasn't yet been identified, and an autopsy hasn't yet been conducted, Craig said.
Walker, 45, who was identified as a suspect Wednesday, was arrested Thursday in Toledo, Ohio, along with a female companion.
Craig said it's unclear whether the boy knew his attacker, and he called the man "yet another coward preying on children."
"I made a promise yesterday," Craig said. "I said, 'We will find you. We will get you.' And within 24 hours, the suspect's in custody. This should be a message to all who perpetrate crime against children."
He said it's inappropriate for people to criticize the mother for her son being out at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and that the conversation should be about supporting the family.
"She's a loving mom," Craig said. "Name a city where a teenager doesn't go out in the summer months."
Craig said more than 100 law enforcement personnel have been on the case, including Detroit police, the FBI, Michigan State Police, Toledo Police Department, the Michigan Department of Corrections and more.
Police said Deontae was abducted by a man with a gun Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. while riding his bicycle with a cousin on Detroit's east side. Police said the man grabbed Deontae by the arm, forced him into a rear passenger door of black Chevrolet Impala with a spoiler and drove off.
Throughout the encounter, the man who police believe was Walker was carrying a nickel-plated revolver, Craig said Tuesday.
Just before the abduction, Deontae took cash from the same man who had been urinating outside the store and dropped money on the ground, the cousin later told police. Deontae and his cousin then pedaled away.
