Florida woman who kept son in feces-filled home charged with neglect

A Florida woman is facing child neglect charges after authorities realized her 11-year-old boy was living in a house full of animal feces.

Paula Gray was arrested at her mother’s home in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., where authorities found 30 dogs – 21 adult dogs and 9 puppies.

"It turns my stomach that someone would force a child to live in this kind of filth," Sheriff Michael Adkinson told WEAR-TV. "There is absolutely no excuse for it."

Authorities responded, because someone reported Gray to the Department of Children and Families. The complaint said more than an inch of feces covered the floor of the home.

DCF officials said they could smell feces standing outside the house.

The dogs were taken to the Walton County Animal Shelter, WJHG-TV reports. Gray has a week to come up with an amount of money to get them back. If she doesn’t, the dogs will be put up for adoption.

Gray was charged with child neglect without bodily harm and booked at the Walton County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
