6 killed when van overturns on I-95 in Virginia
CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — Six people died and several others were injured in an early-morning crash Saturday when a van overturned a number of times on a major north-south interstate, Virginia State Police said.
A Dodge van, carrying 16 passengers, veered off Interstate 95 in Bowling Green, Va., then swerved back onto the roadway and crossed two lanes before hitting a Toyota Camry, police said.
The Toyota spun out and the van overturned five to six times, police said. Six passengers, who were ejected from the van, died at the scene, police said.
The driver of the van and nine other passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
It appears that no one in the van was wearing a seat belt when it crashed around 12:30 a.m., Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said in an email to the Associated Press.
Police said the passengers thrown from the van were four men, one woman and a juvenile.
Officials said the names of the deceased will be released once relatives are notified.
