Australian woman wakes up to a 17-foot python in bedroom

Julie Birrell woke up Monday morning to find a 17-foot python in her bedroom.

Birrell, who was staying at friend Trina Hibberd’s house in North Queensland, Australia, told ABC News Online “all hell broke loose.”

The python stretched between the guest bedroom and living room, BBC reports.

This wasn’t the first time the snake, named Monty, slithered into the home. Hibberd thinks it’s been living in the roof of her house for years.

Hibberd told ABC she first saw it 15 years ago, when it poked its head into the bathroom when she was having a shower.

Snake removers came to her house at 4 a.m. Monday to remove the reptile, who managed to turn on a light and knock over a lamp before they arrived.

"The tongs won't hold it, it's too big, so I use the tongs to divert its attention and grab it by the scruff of the neck," snake-catcher Dave Goodwin told the BBC.

After containing Monty, snake catchers released it into a local water treatment plant, which backs onto native bushland.
