Boy rescued from pool on Anthem of the Seas cruise ship
ASBURY PARK, N.J. — An 8-year-old boy was rescued from a swimming pool on the Anthem of the Seas cruise ship while it was sailing toward the Caribbean Thursday evening, authorities said.
The boy fell into a pool and was underwater for an "undetermined amount of time," according to Officer Phillips of the New York Police Department's Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information. She declined to give her first name. Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier of U.S. Coast Guard public affairs also said a boy was rescued from a pool on the ship.
The boy was unresponsive when pulled out by medical staff on board, according to Phillips. Those first responders performed CPR and an NYPD helicopter took the boy to Staten Island University Hospital North.
She didn't know how the boy fell into the pool.
Police got the call about 8 p.m. ET. At the time, the ship was 15 miles south of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, according to Phillips. The ship's home port is at Cape Liberty in Bayonne, N.J.
The Anthem of the Seas made headlines earlier this year after sailing through a storm that damaged the ship and frightened passengers.
