Driver shot by cop at Reno Wing Fest identified

RENO — Officials have identified the man who was killed Sunday in an officer-involved shooting after the vehicle he was driving turned into a pedestrian-filled event in downtown Reno.

Raul Saavedra-Vargas was identified Tuesday morning by the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident began around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when a Reno Police car attempted to make a traffic stop around Kuenzli and East Second streets, according to a press release from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

The silver minivan continued toward Virginia Street, which was closed to traffic for the Biggest Little City Wing Fest.

"As the minivan approached Virginia Street from East Plaza, a Reno Police officer, who was on foot in the area, fired on the vehicle. The minivan turned on to the 300 block of North Virginia Street where it came to a stop," the press release said.

Saavedra-Vargas was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

No civilians or officers were injured and no clear motive has yet been determined.
