#PrayforItaly: Italy earthquake spurs support from Rome and nearby countries


As many woke up to the news of the Italy earthquake, #terremoto (earthquake in Italian) and #prayforitaly started trending on Twitter. As many as dozens of people were killed by the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that hit central Italy.

Horrifying images and video of rescues show some still trapped in the rubble.

Amid the chaos, nearby towns and some countries are expressing concern and a desire to help. Rome is offering tools and resources to neighbors in Amatrice and Accumoli, the hardest-hit towns.

Public events in nearby San Benedetto del Tronto have been canceled or postponed.

Government officials outside of Italy are also stepping forward.

Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras said Greece is ready to help Italy “in any way needed.”

Prime Minister of France Manuel Valls expressed concern for the victims and their families.

The President of the French Republic, François Hollande, called the earthquake a “terrible tragedy.”

Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama said he stands with his Italian friends.

Donald Trump tweeted his condolences for victims of the earthquakes in Italy and Myanmar, ahead of President Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton.

Outlines of Italy with a heart overlay near the destruction are flooding Instagram, as people ask for prayer.

The Italian Football team announced it will set aside a moment of silence today to remember earthquake victims. Players also plan to wear black armbands this week in memory of the victims.
