3 soldiers killed in Jordan ID'd

The Defense Department has identified three Army sergeants killed in an attack at a Jordanian military base.

Staff Sgt. Kevin McEnroe, 30, of Tucson died Friday, along with Staff Sgt. James Moriarty, 27, of Kerrville, Texas, and Staff Sgt . Matthew Lewellen, 27, of Lawrence, Kan.

The men were helping to train Jordanian soldiers at the King Faisal Air Base in Al-Jafr to fight the Islamic State, KHOU-TV reported.

The Defense Department was working with Jordanian authorities to investigate the attack, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said Friday.

“The three service members were in Jordan on a training mission, and the initial report is that they came under fire as they were entering the facility in vehicles,” Cook said.

Moriarty's family said they received the news late Friday night when a member of the armed forces knocked on their door, according to KHOU.

"The toughest part, other than that knock on the door is not knowing exactly what happened," family spokesman Wayne Dolcefino told KHOU. "They deserve answers."

Initial reports called the shooting an accident or misunderstanding and said the soldiers failed to stop at a security checkpoint.

But later, the family was told the American soldiers were intentionally shot and that a manhunt was underway to find them, KHOU reported.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. was focused on "getting to the bottom" of what happened and expected Jordanian cooperation in the investigation.

The Defense Department said the soldiers were assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Fort Campbell, Ky., and were supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

Moriarty was a graduate of the University of Texas and Strake Jesuit High School in Houston, according to KHOU.
