12-year-old in Colorado steals mom's Mercedes, wrecks it

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A 12-year-old was in trouble Saturday morning after taking his mom's car on a joyride, then crashing the car.

Edgewater Police say the child and his friends took his mother's brand new Mercedes from their home in Lakewood on Friday night.

The mother said her son and his friends were at her house when she went to bed around 10:30 p.m. She woke up to learn her son had been involved in an accident.

Just before 4 a.m., Lakewood Police noticed a Mercedes driving without it's lights on. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped away and went through a red light.

Police said they did not pursue the car, but the it took a sharp left and hit a parked vehicle.

The 12-year-old and his two friends in the car were taken to the hospital, but have been released.

No word on whether the child will face charges.
