ELM GROVE, La. — A large alligator approaching a roadway was killed before it could impede traffic.

The gator was spied on Louisiana 154, one of two main roads into this community of about 2,000 people almost 20 miles southeast of Shreveport, La.

“While on patrol around 5:30 p.m. Monday, (Bossier) parish police jury Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit officer William Mott spotted the critter approaching the shoulder of the highway and called for assistance,” a post on the Bossier Parish Police Jury’s Facebook page states.

The alligator measured 11½ feet long. Police spokesman Pat Culverhouse said the alligator was euthanized because of its size and the dangers associated with attempting to capture it alive.

"No estimate on the weight of the reptile, but he apparently had been eating well,” the post stated.

Alligators grow a foot a year for their five or six years but not as much later on, according to National Geographic. The average adult male is a little more than 11 feet long.
