Two naked toddlers found wandering a chilly Iowa street
DES MOINES — Police say two small children were found wandering naked in the street on Thursday in Adel, Iowa, a town just west of Des Moines.
Officers received a call Thursday of unsupervised children wandering outside, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dallas County Court.
The kids were found near the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 169, "which was very busy at this time of day," an Adel officer wrote in his report to the court.
A witness found the children outside and brought them into the apartment before police arrived. The man reportedly spotted them after hearing a honking car.
Once police arrived, no one answered their calls at the door. After entering the apartment, court records show authorities found 18-year-old Jasmine Cheyenne Teed asleep in a bedroom. Struggling to wake the mother, the responding officer had to push Teed to wake her, court records show.
Adel police directed questions to Police Chief Gordy Shepherd, who was not immediately available for comment Friday.
Teed is now charged with two counts of child endangerment. Both children are two years old, records show. The temperature at the time of the incident was 43 degrees, police said. And officers say Teed's unsupervised children risked serious injury wandering outside. The children were released to Teed's relatives.
Teed was booked into the Dallas County Jail Thursday afternoon. Her bond was set at $4,000, according to the jail's website.
