N.C. university ends lockdown; no gunman found
North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C, lifted its lockdown on 10,000 students Friday afternoon after a police search failed to turn up a man reported to be carrying a rifle campus, University Police Department Chief Glen Nowell said.
Nowell said campus police and Greensboro officers would continue patrolling the campus and surrounding area as a precaution.
He said the university had received a report of a man with a weapon, perhaps in a backpack, entering the General Classroom Building, but a search over several hours proved fruitless.
The website had issued a "Campus Alert" at mid-morning saying there had been a report of "an unknown black male with a weapon in the area of the General Classroom Building."
The university called on students to close and lock doors and windows during the search.
WFMY-TV reported that two Guilford County schools were also placed on lockdown during the search.
