Mich. mayor wounded in Detroit nightclub shooting

DETROIT -- The mayor of Highland Park was wounded early Sunday in a shooting at a club in Detroit.

Mayor DeAndre Windom was shot in the leg in the Key Club shortly before 2 a.m., Detroit police spokeswoman Kelly Miner said. Police said he was an innocent bystander.

"The Highland Park mayor was in the location when a dispute took place unrelated to the mayor," she said. "The dispute escalated into the shooting."

Windom, who could not be reached for comment, was taken to the hospital and listed in temporarily serious condition, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Police were dispatched to the scene and arrived within seven minutes, Miner said.

A person familiar with the investigation told the Free Press that bouncers at the business got into an altercation with a patron who was being disorderly and pulled out a handgun as he was being escorted out.

The gun went off, hitting Windom in the leg. It's unclear, the person said, whether the man fired the gun or if it went off during the struggle with the bouncers.

Police took the shooting suspect — a 25-year-old Eastpointe man —into custody.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show the man in custody is on parole for a weapons charge from 2012 and has prior drug offenses.
