Myles Munroe was a popular author, televangelist

Myles Munroe was an internationally-known pastor, leadership coach and consultant, known for his faith-based books and popular television ministry.

Munroe, 60, and his wife Ruth Ann were among nine people killed Sunday when the small plane they were in crashed while attempting to land in the Grand Bahamas. The couple are co-pastors of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship. They have two children, Charisa and Chairo.

Munroe, a key player in Bahamian politics, was on his way to host a three-day conference he organized called the Global Leadership Forum, in which world leaders were expected to attend. The conference focused on making on impact in the globalized world.

A posting on the conference's Facebook page said the event will continue.

"This is what Dr. Munroe would have wanted," the post said. "Please keep his family and the ministry in prayers."

Former US ambassador and Atlanta mayor Andrew J. Young was scheduled to attend.

On his foundation's Facebook page, a statement says Young "expresses his deep sadness over the tragic death of his friends Dr. Myles and Mrs. Ruth Munroe. He offers condolences to the Monroe family and the families of the other souls who lost their lives as a result of this shocking plane crash."

According to his website, Munroe was a "business consultant to governments, Fortune 500 companies and corporations, addressing critical issues that affect every aspect of human, professional, leadership, social, and spiritual development."

In 1998, Munroe became the youngest recipient at the time to be bestowed the Queen's Birthday Honors of the Order of The British Empire (OBE) Award, given to him by Queen Elizabeth for his spiritual and social contributions to the national development of the Bahamas.

Posters on social media remembered his work.
