NYPD shooting: #NYPDLivesMatter echoes #BlackLivesMatter

After a gunman killed two New York City police officers in Brooklyn on Saturday, people on Twitter used the hashtag #NYPDLivesMatter to express their outrage, echoing #BlackLivesMatter, which had been used to condemn the police killings of unarmed black men Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner in New York.

The suspect in the New York Police Department shooting, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, apparently posted threats on social media that showed a desire for revenge in the Brown and Garner deaths. The officers, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, were "quite simply, assassinated," New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton said.

The #NYPDLivesMatter conversation captured sentiments ranging from support for the NYPD to criticism of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to accusations of hypocrisy among "protesters" and "liberals."
