Man driving tractor dies after falling through icy lake

EVERGREEN, Colo. — A man who was driving a tractor that fell through the ice Thursday on Evergreen Lake has died, authorities say.

Officials identified the man as Greg Henika, 67, of Jefferson County.

Henika volunteered with the Blue Spruce Kiwanis Club and was grooming the ice for an upcoming charity ice golf event using a tractor that had a plow on the front of it.

Evergreen Fire Rescue confirmed he was only one person on the tractor.

There were several other workers on the ice at the time of the accident. They called 911 when they saw the tractor go through the ice.

Fire officials say Henika was submerged under the water for 40 minutes before being rescued and airlifted to St. Anthony's Hospital.

Evergreen Fire and the West Metro dive team have cleared the ice and are working to pull out the tractor.
