15-story Dallas office tower imploded

DALLAS — A 15-story office building near downtown Dallas was reduced to a pile of twisted steel and dust Sunday morning.
Demolition crews used 500-pounds of explosives to implode the former Affiliated Computer Services/Xerox building along highway U.S. 75 to make way for a new retail shopping center.
The highway and adjoining streets were closed to traffic after the implosion, which resulted in a large dust cloud.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit suspended service in the area Sunday amid the controlled explosion. The rail lines run underground near the site of the implosion.
The demolition of the building has been embroiled in some controversy over development plans for a place called East Village. Members of the community said the plans for the development were changed without a lot of input from people in the neighborhood.
Trammel Crow Co., which purchased the property in 2013, plans to build a Sam's Club and retail center in the location.
The people in the area were not expecting to see a big-box store in the area. They fear a big-box store will ruin the image of what they want the area to be.
