Police: Husband shot wife while on 911 call
GRANBURY, Texas — It was in a few frantic moments Thursday night that a couple, seen smiling in photos on Facebook, went from husband and wife to suspect and victim.
The Hood County Sheriff said 51-year-old Tommy Dooley, admitted killing his wife, LaVera Aiken Dooley, 65, shooting her to death in her Pecan Plantation driveway.
"She was shot point blank range, basically, very close range six times," says Sheriff Roger Deeds.
Deeds says it all happened while LaVera was on the phone with 911.
"Crying, screaming, hollering for help," he says, "and her last dying breaths are caught on the call."
The sheriff says this was the second time LaVera had called 911 for domestic issues; the first was Jan. 20. Dooley, he says, left the house before authorities arrived.
"One of my buddies said he actually heard the gunshots last night," says John Mark Davis, who was a fellow insurance agent with Aiken Dooley. "I just couldn't believe that's who it was."
Davis, who doesn't live far from the Dooleys, says the community has lost a true professional and philanthropist in Aiken Dooley. He's known her for 16 years. She had her own insurance agency in Granbury. The sign on the door, telling people they were closed because of a death, barely begins to tell you how much her death has rocked people.
Those who work in neighboring businesses say they'll miss Aiken Dooley's smile and friendly attitude. They say she brought her dog to work every single day.
"It's just a heartbreaking scenario," Davis says.
And now Tommy Dooley, who according to the sheriff had only recently married his wife, is now charged with murdering her. He remains in jail under a $500,000 bond.
