Suspect dead after Ga. sheriff, 3 others shot
CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Police say a suspect who shot a sheriff and a deputy at a home where a woman and another man were found deceased is also dead.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell and a deputy identified as William Zigan responded to a domestic call. They found a woman, later identified as the suspect's wife, dead in a garage and an armed man on the scene. Both Terrell and Zigan were shot by the suspect, who fled the scene.
The suspect, identified as former Gainesville police officer Anthony Giaquinta, apparently crashed his vehicle near the house. He then headed back to the house.
Around 11:20 p.m., police found the body of the suspect and another man near the back of the home. It's not yet clear the circumstances behind their deaths.
The sheriff and deputy were transported to local hospitals for treatment. They were said to be responding well to treatment. Terrell has since been discharged to recover at home. Zigan was still in the hospital Monday morning.
The GBI is handling the investigation. They said Giaquinta used to work for the Habersham County Sheriff's Office as a canine officer, but left about a year ago. He worked for the Gainesville Police Department before that.
