Judge clears surgery for gunshot to leg; no arrests
DETROIT — While police continue their hunt for the shooter, U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg cleared one hurdle Monday in coming through surgery to repair damage to his leg after he was shot on his front porch in Detroit Thursday night.
"Judge Berg came through his surgery well. He is on the road to recovery and hopes you'll respect his privacy," Berg's wife, Anita Sevier, said in a statement Monday.
The bullet tore through his leg above his right knee. Berg was able to get up and to take a few steps with a walker Saturday and is expected to be on crutches for a few months.
Berg, 55, was shot at about 9:10 p.m. Thursday after retrieving a garbage bin from the curb. Two men approached him on his front porch and told him they wanted to go in his house. When he refused to let them in, a gunshot was fired, striking him in the leg, above his right knee.
The men fled.
The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for the two men who attacked Berg.
