Md. college fraternity under fire for racist email

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Not long after members of an Oklahoma University fraternity caught on camera singing a racist chant grabbed headlines, a University of Maryland fraternity has also come under scrutiny for a similar offense.

Thursday night, UMD President Wallace Loh issued a statement about an email a Kappa Sigma fraternity member wrote last year. According to WTOP, the email from January 2014 includes racial slurs referring to black, Indian and Asian women. The report says that the letter also "alludes to raping women during Rush Week."

Loh said in his statement that university officials learned of the email this week. According to Loh, the fraternity has "taken swift and decisive action in this matter" and asked for training on diversity and respect for the fraternity. He said the university will provide that training,

The Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct at the university is also investigating the incident.
