Shooting of senior in Ohio home may have been accident

MADISONVILLE, Ohio -- The gunshot that sent an 87-year-old man to the hospital Tuesday might have been accidental, officials said.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at St. Paul Village in Madisonville, an independent living apartment complex for seniors.

The man was taken to the hospital by an ambulance, dispatchers said.

Police at the scene said the bullet struck the man's chest. When asked if injuries were life-threatening, a Cincinnati police sergeant said "anything with an 87-year-old man is serious."

Police also said it appeared the gun was discharged by accident.

Kathy Ison-Lind, the vice president of affordable housing and in-home services for Episcopal Retirement Homes, said the man was coherent on his way to the hospital.

"We just don't have any details at the moment," she said.

Ison-Lind said that she's never seen anything like this at St. Paul Village before.

"It's a wonderful community," she said.
