ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Police say an officer is in critical condition after being shot Friday morning by a suspect that remains on the loose.

Anne Arundel County Police say the officer was transported to Baltimore Shock Trauma after being shot by a suspect near a 7-Eleven on College Parkway.

According to police spokesman T.J. Smith, the officer had arrived at the business on his own at approximately 2 a.m. when someone there told him a person was acting suspiciously. Smith said the officer approached the person, a struggle ensued, and they both ran on foot away from the store. Witnesses described hearing a gunshot.

The officer called for backup and arriving officers found him shot in the upper body, according to Smith.
