Milwaukee mayor: Driver 'assassinated' following accident

Milwaukee police on Monday said they were trying to track down an unknown suspect who the city's mayor said "assassinated" a 40-year-old motorist and gunned down a 15-year-old boy following a fatal accident on Sunday that left a 2-year-old boy dead.

Police said the tragedy began after 2-year-old Damani Terry wandered out in the street and was struck by a van driven by Archie Brown Jr.

Brown, 40, got out of his van and within moments was shot, according to police. A 15-year-old, Rasheed Chiles, was also shot and died later at a hospital, while undergoing surgery, according to a police statement. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said that Chiles and Terry were brothers.

Both Chiles and Terry had been attending a party near where the crash occurred, according to the police.

Witnesses told police that Brown immediately stopped and appeared upset as he stood over the boy, who had been attending a party near the crash scene in the 4600 block of N. 48th Street.

"Someone got angry," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told reporters. "Someone took a gun and basically assassinated this gentleman."

Brown's father, Archie Brown Sr., said a neighbor riding with his son on a trip to Home Depot told him that Chiles had gone to the scene to try to help.

"He came over to assist Junior and while he was assisting him they were shot," the elder Brown said, according to the Associated Press. "It's a tough situation."

The tragedy comes as Milwaukee has seen a dramatic spike in gun violence.

The two shootings--in addition to an unrelated incident in the city on Sunday that left 22-year-old man dead--brings Milwaukee's homicide toll to 39 for the year, according to Barrett. At the same last year, Milwaukee had recorded 14 homicides. Non-fatal shootings are up 38% so far this year as well in Milwaukee.

Police say no suspects are in custody in the shooting deaths of Brown and Chiles.
