19 injured in Megabus crash on I-65 in Indiana

EDINBURGH, Ind. — A Megabus traveling from Chicago to Atlanta crashed Monday near here, injuring 19 people, according to the Indiana State Police.

The bus was traveling south on Interstate 65 when it crashed around 5:30 a.m. ET about 35 miles southeast of Indianapolis, police said.

Nineteen of the 63 passengers on the bus were hurt, but all of the injuries were minor, said Trooper John Perrine of Indiana State Police. Those injured were taken to hospitals in Johnson, Marion and Shelby counties.

A semi-truck was stopped because of construction, and the Megabus didn't stop quickly enough, Perrine said. The Megabus struck the back of the semi-truck, pushing the truck into two passenger vehicles.

The left lane of the interstate was closed while crews responded to the crash, and traffic was backed up for several miles.

"Safety is our No. 1 priority, and Megabus is fully cooperating with the authorities with their investigation into the incident," Megabus spokesman Sean Hughes said in a statement.

IndyGo buses transported the Megabus passengers to a truck stop where they are waiting for another Megabus to take them to Atlanta, police said.

This is at least the third Megabus crash on Interstate 65 between Indianapolis and Louisville since October.

A December Megabus crash near Seymour sent 26 passengers to the hospital. A crash near Greenwood in October sent dozens of riders to area hospitals for treatment.
