Teens caught with marijuana in bike tires
PHOENIX — Officers with Customs and Border Patrol Enforcement arrested two Douglas teenagers last week after discovering marijuana hidden in their bike tires, according to officials.
A drug-detecting dog alerted officers to the 17-year-old male and female bike riders, who officials say were trying to smuggle marijuana through the port of entry on April 10, a CBP statement said.
Upon further inspection, officers discovered 3.5 pounds of marijuana hidden in the tires, amounting to approximately $1,700 in marijuana per bike, officials said.
Earlier that day, officers also seized 274 pounds worth of marijuana hidden throughout an SUV owned by a 44-year-old Mexican national, officials said.
The 250 packages of marijuana were estimated to be worth roughly $137,000.
Officials said CBP seized the vehicles and property and the cases were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
