Fla. woman, thought to be abducted, found safe in Ga.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 78-year-old Florida woman, who was thought to have been abducted, was found safe in Georgia on Thursday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Susan Lockwood Boxx, of Jacksonville, Fla., was found alive and well by a Georgia State Trooper in Americus, Ga., on Thursday morning.
Police thought she had been abducted because she wasn't home, her vehicle was missing, her front door was kicked in and she wasn't answering calls from her alarm company.
Police say Boxx went to Georgia on Wednesday morning, but she ran out of gas.
Authorities said Boxx displayed no signs of dementia prior to this but she found herself in her car, lost in Georgia.
On Wednesday night, Boxx's son went to her house after her alarm company called him when they could not get in touch with her.
When police arrived, they saw that some of her personal items were missing, including her purse.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office later determined that Boxx's house was burglarized after she left. Her disappearance and the burglary are not connected.
In looking at Boxx's financial records, investigators traced her credit card activity up Interstate 95, into Savannah, Ga., and then metro Atlanta.
Americus, in Sumter County, Ga., is 143 miles south of Atlanta and 235 miles northwest of Jacksonville.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was working with the FBI and Georgia authorities to find Boxx — even putting her information on local billboards.
Her family was concerned as she has a heart arrhythmia.
Boxx's son is going to Georgia to meet her, police said Thursday.
