Reports of multiple drug overdoses at N.Y. jail
Six inmates were taken by ambulance to the hospital four to the Westchester Medical Center and two to White Plains Hospital, Westchester County police said.
All six were in stable condition and their names were not being released due to privacy issues. Two inmates reportedly were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
"Some may be a little worse than others," Sgt. Bill Flynn said.
Detectives are investigating what caused the six inmates to become unresponsive in their cell block and drugs is among the possible causes, Flynn said.
"That's the speculation and that's one of the possibilities," Flynn said, referring to drugs. "It could turn out to be something else."
About a dozen people visiting relatives or friends were told to leave the jail, passing under barbed-wire-topped metal fence on Woods Road at about 3:30 p.m. ET.
One visitor said they were given minimal information.
"We were told to leave," Joseph Saunders, 61, of White Plains, told a Journal News reporter. "They told us somebody smoked something and passed out."
Saunders was not pleased that his visit with a relative got cut short, saying, "What's that got to do with us?"
